About ADHERE®

Scios Inc initiated a large postmarketing open-access observational study, ADHERE® (Acute Decompensated Heart Failure National Registry) CORE in August, 2001. Subject eligibility was not restricted to any particular therapeutic agent or regimen. The core module was developed to study the characteristics, patterns of care, and outcomes of patients hospitalized with acute decompensated heart failure. Data were collected beginning with the initial hospitalization contact until discharge, transfer from the hospital or in-hospital death. Subsequently, 2 additional registries were initiated: ADHERE® Longitudinal Module [LM] in May 2002, and ADHERE® Emergency Module [EM] in March 2004. All 3 registries were closed as of March 2006.

The ADHERE® Core Final Cumulative National Benchmark Report of Q1, 2006 gives summary data on the 187,565 hospital admissions included in the database. The ADHERE® data changed the medical community’s perception of the ADHF patient with the realization that “real-world” patients were older, were often women, and often had relatively preserved left ventricular function. Today, it is rare to hear a formal presentation on heart failure management without a reference to ADHERE® data.
